Ind.: Vest saves officer after he is shot in the chest

From staff reports

A Sunday night shooting at 2346 Gay St. left a Fort Wayne Police Officer wounded and the shooting suspect in serious condition at a local hospital.

Officers responded at 7:29 p.m. to a call that someone attending a party at the home was armed. On their arrival, Melvin Bell Sr., 70, was standing in front of the Gay Street residence with a handgun, according to a police report. Bell would not comply with the officers demands to drop the weapon, and pointed the weapon in the officers direction.

A police officer then fired a less than lethal round and struck Bell. The man fired and struck Officer Darrell Caudill in the chest, striking his bulletproof vest. The officers then responded with lethal ammunition and wounded Bell.

Caudill was treated and released from a local hospital.

The police and the Allen County Prosecutors Office are investigating the case.
