Man Slashes Police Officers in Brooklyn

The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Two police officers in Brooklyn were slashed in the face by a 20-year-old man wielding a butcher’s knife and a folding knife, police said.

The apparently unprovoked attack began at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, when Kwesi Ashun approached Officer James Sinnott outside 550 Ocean Avenue in the Kensington section, police said.

Ashun slashed Sinnott across the left side of his face, leaving a gash from his ear to his neck, police said. Sinnott called for help and two additional officers, Brian Risano and Matthew Koeth, reported to the scene.

As the officers tried to restrain him, Ashun took aim at Risano, cutting him on the side of his head, police said. Ashun was subdued only after officers released pepper spray in his face.

All three officers were taken to Methodist Hospital, where they were treated and released. Ashun was taken to King’s County Hospital for psychiatric observation.

No charges were filed, said Detective Noel Waters, a police spokesman.
