MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A police officer shot a knife-wielding man several times Friday in a court house lobby, officials said.

The victim, who was not identified, was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital, said Bobby Hernandez, Miami Beach police spokesman.

The man, in his 30s, walked into the lobby with a knife and confronted a police officer, Hernandez said.

“He charged the officer with a knife,” Hernandez said.

The officer shot the man several times. Hernandez would not disclose how many shots were fired, or where the victim was shot.

The officer, who was not injured, will be placed on a routine 72-hour leave while the shooting is investigated, Hernandez said. He was identified only as a motorcycle officer and a 22-year veteran who was at the courthouse for a 1:15 p.m. traffic hearing.

The court closed after the shooting, Hernandez said.
