MIAMI (AP) - A Miami-Dade County police officer was shot several times after a driver she stopped fired nearly two dozen bullets at her with an AK-47 assault rifle.
The officer, whose name was not released, was in stable condition Sunday at Jackson Memorial Hospital with a wound to the shoulder, police said. She was also grazed on the forehead in shooting.
Police hadn’t found the gunman late Sunday, but they were questioning people possibly linked to the shooting.
The police officer was on patrol Sunday in Miami Gardens when she heard gunshots. She then saw a car leaving the area where she thought the shots came from, police said.
The officer put on her cruiser’s flashing lights and siren and pulled the car over. As she stepped out of the patrol car, the driver of the other car jumped out and opened fire, police spokesman Robert Williams said.
The shooter escaped with his weapon, police said. The officer’s cruiser caught fire - apparently from a bullet striking the fuel line or tank, police said. The officer was not injured by the blaze.
