GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A 27-year-old man was shot to death by Greenville police Friday after a four-hour standoff in which the man wounded his former girlfriend and held his mother hostage.

Assistant Police Chief Laverne Simpson said Michael Brown had been holding his mother hostage at their home since about midnight. His mother, Attie Brown, was accidentally shot in the left arm by police as she tried to get away from her son, said Simpson.

Attie Brown was treated at Delta Regional Medical Center and released.

The shooting occurred about 4:30 a.m. after negotiations broke down, Simpson said.

Early Thursday night, Simpson said Brown had shot Sandra McNeil three times in the legs after an altercation at her home. McNeil, 29, was transported to University Medical Center in Jackson where she was in stable condition Friday.

Simpson said Brown was no stranger to police.

“We have had problems before with him with women and violence,” Simpson said.

The name of the police officer involved in the shooting has not been released, but Simpson said standard procedure is to temporarily relieve an officer of his duties, with pay, pending the investigation.
