NEW YORK — A man accused of driving drunk and killing an off-duty police officer on his motorcycle was jailed Tuesday in $50,000 bond after being arraigned on charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
Kevin Casado was driving a minivan in upper Manhattan when he struck Alexander Felix around 1 a.m. Monday, police said.
Felix, riding a motorcycle south on Broadway, slammed into another car before stopping, they said. He was declared dead at the scene.
At arraignment, Casado was ordered to post $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash and was told to return to court July 6. If convicted of vehicular manslaughter, Casado, 32, would face up to seven years in prison.
Casado, who pleaded not guilty, posted the bond and will be released in a few days, said his lawyer, Deron Castro.
Castro said his client is a hardworking father of three who has been a doorman for the last six or seven years and has no history of drunken driving.
“It was a tragic, tragic accident,” he said of the policeman’s death.
Felix, an officer in Harlem’s 30th Precinct, had celebrated his third anniversary with the police department on Sunday. He was 31.
