[New Haven, CN]

(NEW HAVEN, Conn.) -- Two officers have been taken off street patrol pending an internal investigation into the shooting of a reportedly armed suspect after a short foot chase. The suspect, Troy Smith, was treated for wounds at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

On Dec. 19 Officers Dennis O’Connell and Makiem Miller, of the Street Interdiction Unit, chased Smith into a vacant lot where the suspect allegedly turned a pulled a handgun, police spokesman Sgt. Paul Vance told the Hartford Courant.

O’Connell fired multiple shots. Vance told the newspaper that it was unclear if the suspect fired at all. Miller did not fire any shots.

Vance described Smith as a repeat offender whose crimes have ranged from drug dealing to robbery to assault of a police officer. He completed his last prison term in October, according to Department of Corrections spokeswoman Christina Polce.

“He’s been in and out of our system since 1986,” Polce told the Courant.

No formal charges have been filed in the shooting.
