Gillett, Pa. (AP) -- A suspect accused of killing two sheriff’s deputies who had been trying to serve warrants was arrested Thursday after a 36-hour manhunt, authorities said.

Dustin F. Briggs, 27, was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Thursday while walking down a rural road and taken into state police custody. The arrest came after police received a tip from someone who reported seeing Briggs.

Briggs was wanted in the deaths of deputies Michael VanKuren, 36, of Warren Center, and Christopher M. Burgert, 30, of Sayre, who were shot Wednesday morning in the driveway of Briggs’ junkyard. Briggs was charged with murder late Wednesday, Bradford County Assistant District Attorney Albert Ondrey said.

Briggs was being sought on a bench warrant for failing to appear in court. He was previously convicted of criminal possession of a weapon, a felony.
