Davis, Calif. (AP) - University of California police officers shot and killed a man who had fired at them Tuesday night at a student housing unit at the university’s Davis campus, the school said.
Three officers responded to a report about a suspicious person shortly after 5 p.m. As they approached the man standing outside the student housing office, he took out a handgun and fired at the officers, police said. The officers returned fire and the man died at the scene.
At an evening news conference, school officials tried to assure the public that the campus is safe.
“We want our students and their parents to know that we’re doing everything we can to make sure the students are getting the counseling they need and all the information they need,” UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef said.
Police say this is the first office-involved shooting death that has occurred on the UC Davis Campus.
“The campus is safe. We believe this is an isolated situation,” UC Davis Police Chief Calvin Hendry said.
Police did not release the name of the man, who appeared to be between 18 and 20 years old, and did not say if he was a student at UC Davis.
The officers involved in the shooting also were not identified and were placed on administrative leave until the incident is investigated by the UC Davis Police Department, the Yolo County District Attorney’s office and the Yolo County Critical Incident Response Team. Officer-involved shootings are routinely investigated.
Investigators are interviewing several eyewitnesses.
