WASHINGTON — The officer who came face-to-face with the Navy Yard gunman in last month’s shooting rampage is overcoming his injuries with the help of a fundraising team.
Officer Scott Williams suffered multiple shots to his legs and now has a titanium rod in place of his right leg, according to WJLA.
A police-centric fundraising group called the Renegade Pigs has come together to help Williams during his recovery.
Officer Heather Munsterman, who was hit in July by a texting driver, also received funding from the group, according to the report.
“These guys are great. They’ve been great. Everybody has,” said Williams of the group. “So thanks. That’s all I can say.”
Williams has undergone three surgeries and expects to have at least one more.
According to their website, the Renegade Pigs is a non-profit organization comprised mainly of retired and active officers who unite to support officers and their families.
13 people were killed in the Navy Yard attacks, including the gunman, identified as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis.
