SHIRLEY, N.Y. — Eight drunken drivers were arrested in Shirley over the weekend after the Suffolk Highway Patrol set up a sobriety checkpoint at a busy intersection, the police said.
On roving patrol in Shirley and on southbound lanes of the William Floyd Parkway at Montauk Highway, the drivers of 1,315 vehicles were checked by the police, resulting in the eight arrests, the police said.
Those arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated were Liza Modena, 53, of 13 Huron Rd., Shirley; Dianne Vogel, 55, of 1054 Connetquot Ave., Central Islip; Brian Daley, 30, of 120 Old Orchard Rd., Wading River; Matthew Cady, 21, of 79 Lynn Dr., Andover, N.J.; Steven Giampino, 18, of 14 Matsunaye Dr., Medford; Christopher Lorey, 22, of 136 Dana Ave., Mastic; Russell Clinton, 59, of 44 Woodlawn Ave., East Moriches; Derrick Proctor, 21, of 24 Lincoln Blvd., East Moriches.
Proctor was also charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and driving while ability impaired by the combined influence of alcohol and drugs, the police said.
During the checkpoint operation from Friday at 11 p.m. through Saturday morning at 3 a.m., the Suffolk Highway Patrol was assisted by officers from the Suffolk County Parks Police.
Those arrested were processed at the Seventh Precinct and held overnight for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip.
