SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A local deputy is receiving the ultimate gift this holiday season — a new kidney from a fellow law enforcement officer.
Deputy Blayne Badura, 44, suffers from IgA nephropathy with end stage renal failure, according to WFTV. His kidney’s are only working at seven percent and he does dialysis three days a week when he’s not on patrol.
The 15-year veteran of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Department has struggled to find a donor due to his blood type, the news station reported. He is B-, which is a difficult blood type to match.
Originally, they told him it would be four to six years until he could receive a kidney. But Oviedo Officer Bobby Draughan who has patrolled with Badura countless times, is donating his kidney to an organ pair exchange program, meaning Badura will receive someone else’s donation in return.
“Someone has to start the chain,” Draughan said. “If there’s no one there to step up and donate a kidney then there’s no chain and everyone has to wait.”
