HOUSTON- A death row inmate who walked out of jail in street clothes and was captured three days later while drunk and talking on a pay phone in Louisiana waived his extradition hearing Monday and will be returned to Texas.
Charles Victor Thompson, who was taken into custody Sunday night, made a video court appearance before state District Judge Ramona Manuel in Shreveport on Monday. Authorities said he would be sent to Houston when the paperwork was completed.
Thompson escaped at the Harris County Jail on Thursday, using smuggled clothes and a fake identification badge to get past guards. His escape resulted from “multiple errors” by jail personnel, Harris County Sheriff’s Lt. John Martin has said.
“You know who I am,” Thompson told the police officers who found him standing outside a liquor store in Shreveport. He gave his name when officers again asked his identity.
Thompson, 35, was convicted in 1999 for the shooting deaths a year earlier of his ex-girlfriend, Dennise Hayslip, 39, of Tomball, and her new boyfriend, Darren Keith Cain, 30, of nearby Spring.
He was sentenced to death on Oct. 28 and was being held in the county jail until he could be transferred to a prison in Livingston, about 75 miles to the northeast.
