NEW YORK — Police shot a man holding his mother at knifepoint in the Upper East Side Monday.
The suspect’s sister called 911 around 2:15 p.m. to report a domestic dispute, according to NBC New York. When police arrived, Edgar Soto and his mother were in a hallway on the sixth floor of an apartment complex.
“The police trucks started coming in, and sirens were going all over, cops were running,” bystander Amy Emery said. “People were running around, they were actually screaming and running away from that area.”
Police called for backup, and a sergeant came on the scene to deploy a less-lethal device on Soto, who was not subdued, NBC New York reported.
Soto then approached officers holding the knife, and two officers fired five times. Soto was hit in the side, abdomen and groin, and police said his mother, Flora Soto, 49, was also struck.
Both family members were transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital for treatment.
