JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A 20-year-old man was subdued by Jersey City cops and a police dog, reports said.
Cops spotted Paul Jackson, 20, of Van Nostrand Avenue, on Friday about 8 p.m. as he walked on Armstrong Avenue near King Drive, reports said. A K-9 unit in the area arrived to provide back-up.
Jackson, who was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants, at first complied with officers’ instructions to stop and show his hands, reports said.
But as one officer attempted to cuff him, Jackson swung around, threw a punch at the cop and then ran, reports said.
Officers tackled Jackson but he continued fighting, reports said. At that point, the K-9 officer told Jackson, “Stop resisting, you are under arrest. Stop resisting or I will release the dog!”
Jackson continued fighting, reports said, so the officer ordered police dog Froto to get him. Froto bit Jackson’s left calf and hung on, but officers were able to put cuffs on him.
By that point, reports said, a large crowd had gathered and some appeared to be hostile toward the officers, so they put Jackson in a car and drove him to the South District, where he was treated by EMTs for bruises to his head and the dog bite.
Police Officer Fred Cintron also was treated for a sprained knee and bruises.
Jackson was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and seven warrants for failure to appear in court, reports said.
