DENVER — A Lake County sheriff’s deputy accused of using a TASER on about 30 Leadville high school students has resigned.
Sheriff Ed Holte said John Ortega resigned last week, the day he was eligible to return to work after receiving a week on unpaid suspension for using a “drive-stun” technique on students at a Lake County High School career fair.
“He resigned for personal reasons,” he said.
Lake County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert has not decided whether to charge Ortega in the case. Hurlbert said the investigation was completed last week, and he is reviewing the report. “I expect to have a decision sometime this week.”
