SAN FRANCISCO — A man arrested for allegedly attacking an off-duty San Francisco police sergeant after a fender-bender was identified Monday as 37-year-old Joel Henriquez.
Police officials said Henriquez punched the unidentified sergeant, who fired her weapon at Henriquez and grazed him, after the two pulled over early Sunday at a gas station in the Bayview to confer about the collision.
Their vehicles had collided on Interstate 280 about 12:10 a.m., police said.
An off-duty firefighter also pulled into the station, intending to be a witness to the crash, said Police Chief Greg Suhr. He said the firefighter reported hearing the sergeant identify herself as an officer, with the motorist responding that he didn’t care before punching her.
Henriquez, who was struck in the ankle by debris from the officer’s round, refused medical treatment, according to police. He was booked on suspicion of battery on a police officer, making criminal threats against an officer and resisting orders of an officer.
Henriquez was released from custody Sunday evening on $115,000 bail. The incident remains under investigation.
