JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A New Jersey police lieutenant was attempting to help a motorist while on his way to work when he was struck and killed by a vehicle.
NJ.com reports that Jersey City Lt. Christopher Robateau, 49, exited car on the New Jersey Turnpike to help a motorist Friday morning when he was struck and killed. Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop announced Robateau’s death this morning on Twitter.
“We consider him on duty in JC being that he was looking to help someone which is what we want all JC officers to do all the time,” Fulop said on Twitter.
Robateau, who’s been on the job for 23 years, leaves behind a wife and three children.
“The only thing he loved more then the police department was his wife and children,” Deputy Police Chief Daniel Sollitti told The Jersey Journal. “His family was everything in his heart.”
