MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas — A Midland County Sheriff’s Office deputy was fatally wounded serving a search warrant Thursday.

Deputy Sheriff Mike Naylor was shot in the head as he and other deputies served a warrant on a child sexual predator. He was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

An exchange of gunfire followed, and suspect Dan Higgins, 37, barricaded himself in his home, according to News West 9.

A SWAT unit, U.S. Marshals, and Midland Police arrived at the scene and attempted to negotiate with Higgins. He finally surrendered and was taken into custody at Midland County Jail and charged with capital murder among other charges.

“For a lot of our guys, this is probably somebody that they know,” Public Information Officer Sara Bustilloz, said. “And to come and respond to something like this with such professionalism is just something everybody here has been trained to do. But that doesn’t make it any easier.”

A second officer was taken to the hospital following the incident for breathing troubles and was listed in stable condition.
