NEWARK, N.J. — Newark police on Thursday were looking for more suspects after an officer shot and killed a man with a gun in the early morning.
It happened just after 1 a.m. at the intersection of Ludlow and Virginia streets.
A group of men scattered from police after officers arrived to check out a report of a man with a gun, according to a police department news release.
One of the men, according to police, brandished a gun and took aim at one of the officers. The officer shot the suspect in the head.
The man shot was pronounced dead at a hospital. His weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.
Police weren’t immediately releasing further details on the shooting, including the names of those involved.
The Newark Police Department’s Internal Affairs Office was investigating. As with all police-involved shooting incidents in the city, the matter was expected to be referred to a grand jury, according to police.
A spokeswoman for Newark Mayor Cory Booker declined to comment on the shooting, saying the mayor leaves it to the police department to comment on such incidents.
An Essex County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman didn’t immediately return an Associated Press call for comment.
New Jersey’s largest city has been struggling to clamp down on crime. Three months ago, the execution-style killings of three college students in a schoolyard raised alarm in the city.
