Philadelphia police shoot robbery suspect

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA- For the second time this week, a robbery suspect was shot by city police during a chase in which he allegedly threatened an officer with a gun, authorities said.

Police said the latest shooting happened in Southwest Philadelphia at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, when officers investigating an earlier armed robbery approached a man fitting the description of the suspect.

The suspect handed a driver’s license to police and then ran, pulling out a handgun as he fled and pointing it at the officers, police said.

The gun jammed and police fired as the suspect attempted to unjam his weapon, authorities said. The suspect then fired a shot onto the street and police fired again, hitting the suspect at least once in the chest, police said.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he died several hours later.

Police did not immediately release the names of the suspect or the officers.

On Tuesday, police said bank robbery suspect David Henry, 25, of North Philadelphia, opened fire on officers who spotted him hiding in a car in South Philadelphia. Several officers returned fire and struck Henry, who died several hours later.

Officer Ronald Jann was shot in the face, grazing his lip and teeth, and a female bystander suffered a gunshot wound to her leg. Neither the officer’s or the woman’s injuries were life threatening, police said.
