FORT WORTH, Texas — A manhunt was underway Tuesday in Texas for a suspect in a shootout that left a police officer critically wounded and another suspect dead.
Authorities were searching for Ed Russell McIver Jr., 20, who police were pursuing on a felony warrant when the shooting occurred.
The incident began when Fort Worth police officers asked McIver to pull over his vehicle, police said. McIver and his passenger drove off, then fled on foot into a wooded area, authorities said.
Police were pursuing the men when gunfire was exchanged between the two suspects and several officers, said Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald.
One suspect was declared dead at the scene. Law enforcement fanned out across the wooded area looking for McIver, according to Fort Worth police spokeswoman Corporal Tracey Knight.
Knight said the wounded officer was taken to a downtown hospital. Matt Zavadsky, a spokesman for the emergency mobile health care provider Medstar, said the officer is in critical condition.
The officer, whose name has not been released, has worked for the Fort Worth police department since 2009.
