WACO, Texas — A Waco police officer and a local resident were shot after exchanging gunfire, and both were taken to a local hospital.
Noy Moten Jr., 58, of Waco was shot by Waco police officers shortly after 1 a.m. this morning, after police say he shot an officer while in the 1100 block of J.J. Flewellen Road, is in the intensive care unit at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.
Officer Craig Mrosko, a two-year veteran of the Waco Police Department, was released earlier this morning from Hillcrest after being treated for his gunshot wound. The other officer involved in this shooting was Tyrone Robinson, a 17-year veteran.
Moten is a convicted felon for a 1982 voluntary manslaughter case in Waco. Moten was sentenced to 15 years for that crime and was released on parole in 1992. Moten remained on parole until 2001.
Moten is currently out of jail on a $20,000 indictment bond for an aggravated assault he reportedly committed in May. In that case Moten reportedly shot an individual while in the 1200 block of J.J. Flewellen with a shotgun. A trial date has not been set for that case.
Officers received a call regarding a disturbance between Moten and his girlfriend. The caller told dispatchers that Moten was inside the residence and refused to leave.
As officers pulled up in the 1100 block of J.J. Flewellen, they saw Moten walking across the street toward his residence. As Moten stepped inside the gate at the front of his residence, he turned toward the officers who were just getting out of their cars, police said. Officers noticed Moten was carrying a handgun and started yelling for him to drop the weapon. Moten started shooting at the officers, striking one of them in the backside, police aid. Officers returned fire striking Moten several times, according to a police statement. Both the officer and Moten were transported by ambulance to Hillcrest. Moten was listed as stable but critical.
As in all police shootings the officers involved will be on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
