CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A police officer was shot Friday night while responding to a robbery in South Norfolk and a suspect later was shot by police after being chased into Norfolk.

Officers received a call about a robbery at a Chanello’s Pizza at Bainbridge Boulevard and Godwin Avenue shortly before 10 p.m., said Lisa Spruill, a Chesapeake police spokeswoman. When they arrived, two men were still there and one opened fire, striking the officer. The officer was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Spruill said.

One of the men got into a vehicle and fled, with police in pursuit.

The chase continued into Norfolk, ending near the intersection of Charlotte and Fenchurch streets. The man got out of the car and began shooting at the officers .

“We returned fire, striking him,” Spruill said.

The second man was last seen behind the pizza restaurant, and was still at large late Friday. No precise description was available.

The injured suspect also was taken to Sentara Norfolk General, but Spruill did not know if his injuries were life-threatening.

No other details were available.
