ALAMEDA, Calif. — Alameda police will step up their patrols on St. Patrick’s Day as part of an Alameda County-wide effort to curb suspected drunken drivers.
Saturation patrols are also planned for Oakland and Fremont, while police in Berkeley and Livermore are planning to stage sobriety checkpoints.
The increased enforcement is planned as part of “Avoid the 21" — a campaign named after the number of Alameda County law enforcement agencies that normally participate over the New Year’s, Labor Day and other holidays. The California Office of Traffic Safety funds it through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
After St. Patrick’s Day, police agencies say they will next step up enforcement during Cinco de Mayo.
