BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — A smooth-talking, globe-trotting man said to be a serial swindler from Colombia is due to be sentenced in federal court in Vermont for entering the country illegally.
Federal prosecutors are expected to ask a judge in Brattleboro Monday to sentence Juan Carlos Guzman-Betancourt to 10 years in prison.
The Burlington Free Press says Guzman’s lawyers are going to ask that he be sentenced to time-served.
Guzman was arrested in the town of Derby Line in September 2009. He claimed his car had broken down in Canada and he’d crossed the border by accident.
Guzman has been arrested across the world.
He’s been compared to legendary American con man Frank Abagnale Jr., the subject of the film “Catch Me If You Can,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
