KANAWA COUNTY, W.V. — On Thursday about 11:30 p.m., Kanawha County Deputy J.M. Vernon was working a DUI patrol in the west end of the county. Deputy Vernon was traveling west on Route 60 near B Street in St. Albans. The other vehicle involved was traveling east on Route 60.
As both vehicles approached the B Street intersection, the other vehicle made a left turn into the path of Deputy Vernon’s patrol car. The vehicles collided with a significant impact and came to rest in the roadway.
The driver of the other vehicle jumped out of the car and fled the scene on foot. St. Albans Police Department responded quickly and were able to use their K-9 to track the suspect into a residence about two blocks away.
The driver appeared to be intoxicated and admitted to drinking prior to the crash. He was immediately taken into custody.
The driver initially gave officers a false name and false address. Police were able to determine that the driver was Jesse Austin Williams, 23, from St. Albans, originally from Indiana. Deputies also discovered that Williams was a fugitive from justice out of Indiana wanted for violation of probation on a drug charge.
Williams was taken to the hospital by deputies, treated and released Friday morning.
After leaving the hospital, Williams was charged with being a fugitive from justice, three counts of DUI causing injury, three counts of failure to render aide, leaving the scene of an accident, no operators and obstructing an officer. He was taken to the South Central Regional Jail.
The other vehicle involved was a 2006 Honda CRV.
There were two other passengers in this vehicle, in addition to the driver. A 16-year-old male from St. Albans and a 19-year-old male from St. Albans. Both subjects were transported to CAMC General and are listed in stable condition.
Deputy J.M. Vernon was also transported to CAMC General. He was treated and released from the hospital. He does not appear to have any serious injuries at this time.
