EL DORADO, Kan. — A former fire chief was killed Monday after he was thrown from a horse in a riding accident.

KAKE reported that deputies were called to a barn when they found Ralph Green, 73, lying in a fenced area with a severe head injury. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.

A witness said he saw Green riding a horse and that something spooked the horse and it started running in a corral and jumped over a fence, according to the report. Green fell off the horse.

Green’s wife and daughter said the former chief retired in 2000 and riding horses became his passion, according to the report.

“He always said when it was his time to go, there was one thing he wanted to do. He wanted to be on horseback,” his wife Nancy Green said.
