LUBBOCK, Texas — An off-duty Lubbock Police Department officer rescued an elderly woman from a house fire on Sunday, the department announced today on Facebook in highlighting the officer’s actions.
“We are proud to have men and women in our department like Officer J.R. Wood,” read the statement from the department. “Even off duty, our officers go above and beyond the call of duty and care deeply about our citizens.”
According to the Lubbock Police Department, on Sunday, May 10, 2020, Wood was returning home from working security at his church when he observed his neighbor’s house on fire, with smoke and flames pouring out of the windows and vents.
Another neighbor informed Wood that 911 had been called but, their elderly neighbor was still inside.
“Without hesitation, Officer Wood immediately ran inside to find her and get her out safely,” stated the department.
As the Lubbock Fire Department began arriving on scene, Wood escorted the woman out of the burning home — both unharmed.
“Officer Wood could have stopped there, instead he helped the neighbor contact family and then proceeded to help block the road while Lubbock Fire Rescue continued to fight the fire,” stated the department.
