PHOENIX — Phoenix police say officers trying to arrest a home burglary suspect fatally shot him after he grabbed an officer’s Taser and began shocking them.
Detective Stacie Derge says officers were called to a central Phoenix home near 7th Avenue and Thomas Road just after 3 a.m. Saturday by a homeowner who said someone was in his yard and rifling through items in his carport and shed.
Officers confronted the suspect, who was carrying two metal plant stands. Derge says the unidentified man refused to drop them or obey commands, and an officer shocked him with a Taser.
The man pulled the Taser probes from his body and began fighting with two officers. Derge says he got one’s Taser and began shocking the officers.
A third officer then arrived and fatally shot the suspect, who died at the scene.
