Marquis Harrison was trying to get away from officers after they attempted to stop and question him after seeing him run a red light, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.
Marciea Adkins, 42, who worked as a 911 police operator for the Chicago Police Department, was on her way home when her car was struck by a stolen Range Rover, sending it crashing into a fire hydrant according to reports.
Emergency workers transported Adkins to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries later that day, according to the Chicago Sun- Times.
Harrison continued to flee on foot after the deadly collision, but police arrested him not long after, Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Costello said.
Harrison allegedly admitted to a police officer he got “drunk and high” at a party before the incident, and he is held in lieu of $1 million bail on first-degree murder charges.
“Marciea Adkins was loved and respected by all those who knew her and was an integral member of the … police 911 dispatch team,” the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications said in a statement.
