A brief chase through several Syracuse neighborhoods ended when a 34-year-old man put a gun to his head and killed himself.
Syracuse police said they had received a call from the man’s estranged wife Wednesday afternoon, who said he was armed and suicidal. At about 10 p.m., an officer tried to pull over the man’s truck.
Officers followed the man through several neighborhoods before performing a “pit maneuver” to stop the truck and running up to the truck with guns drawn, said Syracuse Police Lt. Tracy Jensen.
The man did not respond to officers’ efforts to talk with him before he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, Jensen said.
Investigators on Thursday were trying to determine a motive for the suicide. Police said a note was found inside the truck, along with numerous beer cans.
Police in Roy confirmed to the Deseret Morning News on Thursday that the man was under investigation for sexual abuse, but would not disclose details.
The man was also facing misdemeanor DUI and weapons charges in Rich County stemming from a traffic stop near Bear Lake on Nov. 24.
