At 12:18 p.m. members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division went to the 2900 block of Northwest Road in unincorporated Marengo Township to serve a domestic battery warrant on Edward P. Bolen, according to a release from Sheriff Keith Nygren’s office.
When police entered the home, Bolen pointed a handgun at them and the deputies fired gunshots but did not strike him, the release said. He then barricaded himself in a basement room.
The McHenry County SWAT team responded and when they entered the basement room Bolen brandished a knife at the officers before he was incapacitated by two beanbag rounds, police said.
No sheriff’s deputies were injured. Bolen, 49, who lived at the Northwest Road address, was treated at Woodstock Memorial Hospital before being released into police custody.
Further investigation of the officer-involved shooting was being handled by the Illinois State Police.
According to McHenry County authorities Bolen has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, both felonies, along with misdemeanor counts of possessing a firearm and ammunition without a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card.
