CCTV video from the Civic Center station shows a former officer arrive by train and fire a fatal shot

SAN FRANCISCO — A Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a homeless man on a train platform last year.

CCTV video from the Civic Center station shows former officer James Crowell arrive by train on July 3, 2011, following reports of a “wobbly drunk.” He fired his weapon at Charles Hill, 45, who was reported to be wielding a knife.

The internal investigation and exoneration by BART police comes five months after the San Francisco district attorney determined Crowell acted in self-defense, according to The Bay Citizen.

Crowell left the agency after the shooting and to work for the FBI.
