SALT LAKE CITY — A police officer in Utah is recovering after he found himself trapped in his burning patrol car Saturday morning. His rescuers: A desk clerk and a security guard from the nearby Motel 6.
According to KSL-TV, the fire started when a truck ran a red light and crashed into a Salt Lake City patrol car.
The officer radioed to dispatch for help but then fell silent.
“Shortly thereafter, it sounds like he lost consciousness,” Sgt. Keith Horrocks told KSL-TV.
That’s when the two motel employees ran to help.
“One grabbed a fire extinguisher, and the other attempted to rescue the officer from the burning vehicle,” said Horrocks.
The good Samaritans pulled the officer out just in time, according to KSL-TV. Police said the officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
“I just keep thinking, you know, these two guys were at the right place at the right time and also took action, and we’re extremely grateful for that,” Horrocks said.
Police said the truck driver stayed at the scene of the crash and was cooperative. The investigation is ongoing.
