Trooper had stopped an SUV for improper license plates when a state police employee struck him

JESSUP, Md. — A trooper was struck by a Maryland State Police employee during a traffic stop on the highway, Wednesday June 8, NBC4 reported.

Trooper First Class Wing Tong had stopped an SUV for improper license plates, police said. As Tong approached the vehicle on its passenger side, a sedan drove off the road and into Tong’s cruiser and the SUV, knocking both into the guardrail.

The driver of the sedan, 65-year-old Maureen Walter, is a state police civilian employee. The vehicle was registered to the department.

Tong’s lights were on at the time of collision, police said to NBC4.

Tong was flown in critical condition to a hospital but is now stable. Walter and the driver of the SUV were both taken to the hospital and remain in stable condition.

No charges have been filed. Police are investigating the crash.
