IRVINGTON, N.Y. — A village police officer was critically injured late Wednesday when his patrol car collided head-on with stolen car being chased by Elmsford police.
The accident happened at the intersection of Main Street and North Broadway (Route 9). A 16-year-old from Connecticut was behind the wheel of the car being pursued. Police said the car had a been stolen from a dealership in Milford, Conn., and was headed south on North Broadway at a “high rate of speed” when the crash occurred. Irvington police this morning identified the injured officer as Luigi Osso, 31, a member of the department for the past two years.
They said he had sustained “severe head trauma and serious injuries to his entire body,” and had already undergone several surgeries at Westchester Medical Center, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
“It’s been a very traumatic night for all of us,” said Irvington Police Chief Michael Cerone, speaking at a noon press conference shortly after returning from the hospital. Cerone said the married Osso is facing “life-threatening” injuries.
