DENVER- Colorado authorities were awaiting word Thursday on when a suspect charged with murdering a police officer would be extradited from Mexico.
The Mexican consul-general scheduled a news conference for Thursday to discuss the extradition of Raul Gomez-Garcia but did not offer specifics. Consulate officials did not immediately return a phone call.
Gomez-Garcia is accused of killing Detective Donald Young, a decorated officer and the father of two girls, and wounding Detective John Bishop. Both were shot from behind on May 8 while they were in uniform but off duty, providing security for a private party.
Gomez-Garcia eluded a massive manhunt in the United States but was captured in Mexico in June and has been jailed there ever since. He faces charges of second-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Denver district attorney’s spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said prosecutors had no word on when Gomez-Garcia might be returned.
Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs agreed in November to extradite Gomez-Garcia, but he had at least two weeks to appeal. The deadline has apparently passed, and Kimbrough said prosecutors have not been told whether an appeal was filed.
U.S. Department of Justice officials, who were working with Denver prosecutors for Gomez-Garcia’s extradition, did not immediately return a call.
