WEST FARGO, N.D. — A West Fargo police officer accused of hitting his girlfriend has resigned. The police department said Allen Schmidt stepped down Tuesday. He had been on paid administrative leave since his mid-December arrest. Police Chief Arland Rasmussen in a statement called the resignation unfortunate.
Schmidt last month pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge. He’s accused of hitting his girlfriend, Sheila Windt, in the face and grabbing her arm. Windt is accused of ripping a lip ring from Schmidt’s mouth and biting his chest and also has pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct.
Schmidt joined the West Fargo force in June 1995. He worked most recently as a narcotics investigator and also did online investigations targeting sexual predators.
