PEARLAND, Texas — An officer was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while responding to a non-emergency call early Sunday.

According to the Houston Chronicle, 30-year-old Officer Endy Ekpanya was driving with no lights or sirens at a normal speed when his vehicle was struck on the driver’s side door as he was slowing to make a turn.

The officer was transported by helicopter to a local hospital, where he died.

The driver who struck him was in serious condition at a hospital and is suspected to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Officer Ekpanya is survived by his 2-year-old son and fiancé.
