While firearms simulators are transforming police firearms training, nothing can replace a live shooting experience for officers. Students can train with the same ammo they carry every day, and with less expensive but similar training loads or lower power simulated ammunition that works in the officer’s own firearm equipped with a conversion kit.

In addition to the firearm and ammo, agencies also need an appropriately equipped range. Whether indoor, outdoor or a combination, a safe range needs shooting stations, targets, air circulation to limit lead exposure, a system to trap on- or off-target projectiles and a way to store and dispose of spent projectiles and casings.

This Police1 guide to buying firearms training – whether you are leading a purchase for the first time or looking to upgrade your department’s equipment – is a starting point for your purchasing process.
