ISSAQUAH, Wash. — The gunman who was fatally shot by officers outside a school on Saturday fired at pedestrians before aiming at police, officials said.
A group of four teens reported seeing a shooter wearing dark camouflage and brandishing two rifles walk through the school parking lot and fire shots in their direction, according to the Seattle Times. None of them were hit, which has raised questions of whether the man was trying to shoot them or trying to attract gunfire from officers.
“If he really wanted, he could have killed us pretty fast,” Shanae Hover, 17, said. “The first shot went between me and my friend.”
Police on Sunday said they still did not know why the 51-year-old man opened fire near Issaquah High School, where an estimated 150 people were gathered for a football game. While children and their parents hid under the bleachers, police fatally shot the gunman.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting, and the Issaquah officers involved in the have been placed on paid administrative leave.
