(LAKEWOOD, Ohio) -- A county law director who was sentenced on Jan. 3 to 90 days in jail and fined $1,000 has accepted an offer to be on the board of the Lorain County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services.
Lakewood Municipal Judge Patrick Carroll then suspended the jail time and $500 of the fine for Mark Provenza, who was arrested Aug. 17 when he lost control of his car and hit a fire hydrant.
Provenza’s blood alcohol level was measured at 0.154 percent. According to Ohio law 0.10 is considered legally drunk.
The law director’s license was also suspended for six months retroactive from the day he was arrested, he will also be made to pay for damages and attend alcohol rehabilitation treatment twice a week. The judge also ordered him to abstain from drinking.
He has admitted that he has an alcohol problem and called the sentence “fair.”
“I think there’s a reason for everything. I don’t think this was the preferred method to be in a position where I can help others, but in the end that’s where I’m at,” Provenza told the Morning Journal. “We’ll just take it one day at a time. I’ll do whatever I can to assist this organization to make treatment available to individuals (who need it).”
