FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Authorities said a Fort Myers man died after Collier County sheriff’s deputies shocked him with a Taser gun during a struggle outside a North Naples convenience store.

A sheriff’s report says Christopher Hernandez died later at a hospital, where he and a deputy were taken for treatment of injuries they received in the fight.

Deputies attempted to subdue Hernandez with pepper spray and the Taser, and it took several more minutes before deputies could handcuff and secure him.

Collier sheriff’s spokesman Dennis Huff said it is too early to say how Hernandez died before an autopsy can be performed.

Meanwhile, records show two police officers who used a Taser stun gun on a 31-year-old Delray Beach man before he died have been reprimanded in the past for minor offenses but never investigated for use-of-force incidents on the job.
