Wirt, Ind. (AP) -- A car driven by a Jefferson County sheriff’s reserve deputy flipped over several times and burst into flames, leaving him critically injured, state police said.

Reserve Deputy John Stahl, 46, of Madison, was responding Monday night to a call of a suspicious vehicle in the area about 40 miles northeast of Louisville, Ky., when his car left Indiana 7, police said.

A passing motorist was able to pull Stahl from the vehicle. He was taken by helicopter to University Hospital in Louisville for treatment.

State police said Stahl was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. A hospital nursing supervisor declined on Tuesday to give any information on his condition.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and a cause was not immediately know, state police said.
