Kansas Robbery Suspect Shot after Hostages Taken to Airport

OLATHE, Kansas- A man took several people hostage while robbing a bank Wednesday and then transported them to a suburban airport before the suspect was shot by police, authorities said.

No one else was apparently injured, authorities said. The suspect was taken by helicopter to a hospital, and his condition was not immediately known, Sgt. Mike Butaud said.

The man had taken about six hostages to the Johnson County Executive Airport in a minivan and may have been trying to get away on a plane, police said.

Television footage showed police cars surrounding a small airplane at the airport.

Hostages had been stripped to their underwear before they were taken from Capitol Federal bank in Olathe to the airport, about two miles away, according to witnesses.

Other details about Wednesday morning’s robbery were not immediately available.
