METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Deputies shot and killed a man after he stabbed his girlfriend and then lunged at officers Thursday.
Toby Martinez, 38, was holding his girlfriend, Miriam Tabora, 49, at knifepoint when deputies responded to a domestic violence call by a neighbor, investigators said.
Deputies said Martinez had already beaten Tabora and slashed her with a hunting knife when they arrived. Martinez then allegedly lunged at Sergeant Craig Pond and Deputy Steven Abadie, prompting them to open fire.
“The name we give that is suicide by cop,” Sheriff Harry Lee said. “They recognize that the actions they take are going to precipitate a shooting by the police.”
The woman was being treated at East Jefferson Medical Center. None of the officers was injured.
