The Associated Press OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Capt. Thomas Warren is the new police chief of Nebraska’s largest city.
Mayor Mike Fahey named Warren on Thursday. Warren, a 19-year department veteran, is Omaha’s first black police chief.
He was selected over fellow Captains Donald Thorson and Eric Buske.
Warren came out of the screening process with the highest rating among the three. He is the only one among the three who hold a master’s degree.
Fahey promoted both Thorson, a 22-year veteran, and Buske, who has served 19 years, to deputy police chiefs.
Warren replaces Don Carey, who left the post in June. Al Pepin has served as interim chief.
Warren has commanded the department’s northeast precinct. Thorson is acting deputy chief and the architect of Omaha’s new crime analysis program. Buske has commanded the narcotics unit for four years.
