Officer Charged in Hit-and-Run Accident Remains in Jail

PHOENIX (AP) -- A Scottsdale police officer arrested on suspicion of causing and fleeing from a collision that seriously injured a Maricopa County sheriff’s deputy remains in jail, according to investigators.

Kevin Baxter, 31, was charged Saturday with aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an injury accident. His bail was set at $54,000.

Douglas Matteson, 29, of Higley was thrown from his motorcycle Saturday morning on U.S. 60 in Mesa and dragged more than 60 feet.

Matteson received head trauma injuries and one of his legs was amputated. He remained in serious condition Sunday.

“We’re all kind of upset at this point,” said sheriff’s spokesman Lt. J.J. Tuttle. "(Matteson) was liked by all.”

Both officers were off duty when the accident occurred.

Baxter is on administrative leave.
