Veteran Calif. Cop, Wife Die in Crash

San Jose Mercury News

A veteran San Jose, Calif. police officer was killed, along with his wife, when their motorcycle and a van collided Sunday in Tuolumne County, the San Jose Police Department confirmed Monday.

Carl B. Watt and his wife were pronounced dead at the scene after the 2 p.m. crash. His wife’s name was not available.

The pair were riding on Highway 108 near Sonora when a van on Obyrnes Ferry Road pulled out in front of them, said officer Kelly Carreno of the California Highway Patrol Central Valley Division.

Watt, who lived in Tracy with his wife, had worked on the San Jose police force for nearly 19 years and was currently patrolling on the swing shift.

At the San Jose Police Department, officers mourned the loss, describing Watt as a quiet performer.

“Carl was a very squared-away guy, a very competent investigator, one of those guys that just day in and day out could be counted on to do his job,” said Lt. Scott Cornfield, commander of the sexual assault unit. “He wasn’t flashy by any means, but he was easy to work with.”
